Dan Pastorini, who struggled for most of the game, hit Billy "White Shoes" Johnson on a 22 yard touchdown pass in the game's final seconds to lift the Oilers over the Jets 16-15.
Running back Bruce Harper did most of his work through the air, catching five passes for 50 yards, but he also scored both Jets touchdowns on the ground.
Pastorini hit Mike Barber for a 7 yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter. Pastroini had been picked off in the first quarter trying to hit Barber in the end zone on the same play.
Harper's second TD countered the Barber score and the Oilers got the ball back with 2 minutes remaining.
Barber caught a pair of third down conversion passes to keep the drive alive. Pastorini then hit Ken Burrough, who had been double covered most of the day, on a 30 yard bomb to put Houston deep in NY territory.
Pastorini then went deep to Johnson from 22 yards out and Johnson celebrated with his Funky Chicken dance. Since Roger Goddell is not yet commissioner, there was no flag for celebration.
Toni Fritsch, who had earlier missed an extra point, converted to give Houston the lead. Richard Todd's desperation pass to Rich Caster was intercepted, sealing an Oiler win.
